CATHY83001  Thanks for the update! I noticed a folder of "Extras" with a bunch of zip files for recipe importers. Do these install automatically, or do I need to unzip them? If so, where should I put them so they are used by MacGourmet?

CATHY83001  P.S. Is there a way to have the recipes print in a larger font than the default? My eyes aren't what they used to be!

STEVEN GOODHEART  Thanks for the website updates....that most be a constantly changing and moving target!

I love this program....it so cool the way it can grab entire recipes from a website and parse out all the elements for you automatically. And even if you want to grab a recipe at a non-supported site, the program can still grab all the images and text via a hot key or Services menu, and then help you quickly slice and dice via the smart interface. Good stuff..although now I probably have more cool recipes than I can possibly do in a lifetime! But, I have choices! :)

LARRYMCJ  When I first purchased MacGourmet, a couple of years ago, it was a great program. Then you could get replies to email and even better, you rarely needed to email them because it just worked.

Over time they've tried to keep up with the very good web import functions YummySoup! has for working with all the primary food sites (FoodNetwork.com, etc.) and now the imports hardly ever work. People complain about this in their forum all the time and all they say is "it's the site's fault...we'll fix it in the next update..." but the next update seems to never come, or is so far away that it does no good.

I like the feature set of MacGourmet more than anything out there right now, but I'm tired of their web recipe imports not working as advertised. The next best choice is YummySoup! which does an unbelievably great job in importing recipes from the online cooking sites, but the current version is still not up to par with all the other features of MacGourmet.

Bottom line is if you want the best imports from recipe sites you need to use YummySoup! (which will supposedly be upgraded soon to version 2.0) or if you need all the extra features like cooking tools needed, word region categories for recipes, and many other extraneous info, then MacGourmet would be your best bet...at least for now.

ADVENIO SUPPORT  Hi LARRYMCJ , I'm really not sure what you mean when you say "now the imports hardly ever work. People complain about this in their forum all the time and all they say is "it's the site's fault...we'll fix it in the next update..." but the next update seems to never come, or is so far away that it does no good."

These recipe web sites change constantly, and MacGourmet is always updated as soon as it can be to keep up with the changes (for instance, the version you comment on includes fixes for two recent site changes). There is always some amount of lag, just because I can't really do a release immediately when something is fixed, but in general, things are found and fixed pretty quickly. I'm also not sure what you mean about next updates never coming, etc. because I don't typically make comments about future updates.

I try and fix web site imports as soon as someone reports them not working (for instance, one site just broke today). I'm really not sure why you claim that you're "tired of their web recipe imports not working as advertised." When something breaks, the first thing you need to do is make sure that your version is up to date. The next thing to do is to send a quick email with a link so that if I don't know about the site change, I can file a bug and get it fixed. Once I have the information, I can fix the problem.

LARRYMCJ  I don't want to get into a debate about this...as there is no doubt you currently have the best cooking and recipe software on the planet. The features of MacGourmet Deluxe also far outweigh the nearest competitor, but the one thing you're not even close on is importing recipes from the primary cooking sites...and that's a huge issue for me.

Grab a trial version of YummySoup! just for the sole purpose of seeing how he manages the imports from cooking sites as well as imports from the sites he doesn't have automatically configured. I'm not even asking that you you try to keep up with the number of sites he imports from...but just keep up with the four or five you list continuity with. When I searched for this problem in the MacGourmet forum on your site I saw several instances of it going back quite some time and as a user of your product for nearly three years I can attest to it taking generally more time than normal to fix the import problems. Also, I have never experienced an import from FoodNetwork.com that was absolutely letter perfect...it has simply never happened (in my experience, anyway).

That said...I still maintain MacGourmet is the best and most feature-filled cooking app out there, and for those of us who cook several times daily it's a god-send. But I still need a way to not have to spend 20 minutes fixing a recipe that I've imported from a website (not the web-clipping feature)...the errors in the importing. That's a huge problem for me and I stand by the fact that MacGourmet has had import problems with nearly all the sites it claims to automatically import from. The only one I rarely use that is on your list is food.yahoo.com, so I can't speak for it.

MacGourmet is the second most used app on my Mac, so when it's got a problem...yes, I get upset. But this is the first time I've ever vocalized the problem and it's been happening for a very long time. And reading what you have said more than once in your own support forum..."I'll get that fixed in the next update".

If I'm wrong, I'll certainly apologize, but I'm sitting here using an import feature that simply doesn't work...so I don't think I'm wrong. If you would like an email every time I notice an import problem, you'll get one in the future. I will gladly send you an email so we can continue this in private if you wish. You have a great product and this is not the forum for a debate.

BEAVIS  Why can't this program import simple RTF text. Why do you have to copy/paste text. Most of my recipes are in RTF format. Why invest in a product that is so limited.

FACEMAN  If you are entering recipes from scratch (not importing them from another recipe program), this program is the first Mac-based cooking software program that is worth paying for. While there are some minor irritations (what program does not have those?!), after considerable use, I can enthusiastically recommend this software.

I do have one significant complaint about this software that pertains to the importing of recipes from other recipe software. While the software says it can import from other programs (I previously was using Cook'n), it does a very poor job of actually importing each recipe. I have an extensive recipe collection in Cook'n. After importing recipes into MacGourmet Deluxe, I found I had to manually go into EVERY recipe and make corrections. In many instances, the import would actually take a portion of one recipe and add it to an adjacent recipe. On other instances entire recipes would be omitted from the import. It would also place items in the wrong place within a recipe. This, of course, is totally unacceptable. My recommendation is that, if you have a large electronic recipe collection and unless you plan on manually editing virtually every imported recipe, this software may not be for you.

Aside from that importation issue, this really is a great software program.

PFACKELMANN  I like the layout too and also share the opinion about importing.

I really miss the possibility to import recipes from csv or tsv files.

Is it really so difficult to install that?

NATE HOULE  This app rocks! It just keeps getting better and better. Its definitely my favorite recipe manager, by a long shot. I feel guilty calling it a "recipe manager", it does soooooooooo much more. Shopping lists, portion conversion, access to nutritional information, etc. etc. One thing I can say about MacGourmet Deluxe that I can rarely say about any other application (regardless of genre) is that everything I've wanted to do, it does. This application is super intuitive. I can honestly say that I cook more now than ever before because of MacGourmet Deluxe. The developers have seriously thought of everything. Thanks a bunch Mariner, keep up the great work!

DARYLF2  Is there any disadvantage to buying this "bundle" over the standard version direct from Advenio.com?

For example, if the distribution deal with Mariner Software ends, will I be able to continue to get free updates of MacGourmet and the three plugins from Advenio? I'm a little leery of buying the bundle because of this...

XENOPHILE  Good questions. I'm curious, too.

This arrangement between Advenio and Mariner is confusing. I don't understand the point. Are Advenio planning to abandon MacGourmet and sell it to Mariner? If not, how do they benefit from letting Mariner lard MacGourmet with bloat and then take a cut of their profits?

I don't care for Mariner at all. They have a history of acquiring killer apps only to transform them into bloatware. Mariner developers seem to have little creativity or sense of function, so they bloat all the wonderful apps they buy with a dizzying array of features. I was a dedicated MacJournal user until Mariner bought it, and within a year or so the lean and quick journaling app I knew and loved was expensive bloatware.

I love MacGourmet because it's a killer recipe manager. I'm not looking for something that analyzes nutritional content and creates shopping lists based on meal plans for the next month. I do plan meals, but I also like to be inspired, and I like to create or discover new dishes based on what's left in my fridge. I like to cook what I feel like eating, not what some list I made a week ago tells me I'm supposed to eat.

Are you listening, Advenio/Mariner? Instead of larding your app with nutrition data and rigid scheduling, how about doing something creative? Instead of a rote nutrition database for ingredients, how about a feature that takes what's left in my fridge and pantry, and lists the recipes I can use with those ingredients? Instead of a scheduler, how about a feature that analyzes what meals I tend to cook on each weekday, and then lists the recipes I've used the fewest times for a particular day of the week?

Do something exciting, not this dull bloated crap.

ADVENIO SUPPORT  @XENOPHILE: Honestly, I don't understand your beef. You do realize that MacGourmet is still available as it always has been, that you don't have to purchase Deluxe, or any of the "bloat" as you call it, right? Mariner didn't acquire the product. It's just a cheaper retail bundle. It's a distribution deal, I still own it and develop it. Period. If you have a problem with it, just ignore Deluxe and stick with the standard version of MacGourmet.

As to what might happen at the end of the distribution deal, it's not a short term deal, and in the event of termination, there would be some kind of path back to the regular Advenio product.

QUICKBEN  I originally received this as part of a MU Promo bundle. I sent it my wife's way and she loves it. I've even taken to d/l recipes from some of the online resources. It's quite simple to use and the layout (gui) is exceptional. Nice program for a very reasonable price.

Plus, it has a good beat and you can dance to it.

JESSICA BRAMEL  I find the possibilities of this program to be really exciting for anyone who likes to have things they care about, in this case cooking and wine, organized and accessible. It gives you one place to plan meals, access recipes & wines, rate them, create them and you can also make a cook book.

I gave it a 4 because there are a few things that I think could improve.

1. When adding a meal or what you actually going to prepare you have to go down to the wheel for each step and that made me frustrated. I just wanted to be able to click on Breakfast and fill in what we will be having. Am I getting lazy or what!

2. I also wish was that they had an icon on the main work page where I could just click on for the meal plan. It would just be nice to have a visual of it. There is a short-cut to meal planning which almost makes up it.

3. The shopping list is a little difficult to figure out from the meal planning section. However they do have a user guide that can be very helpful.

I had plans on creating such a system but to be honest I would rather cook. Now I just need to find one of those covers for my key board so I can go create some new secret family recipes! You can also take pictures of your master piece and add it to your recipe.

JESSICA BRAMEL  I just wanted to correct part of my review from before. I noted that it would be helpful to be able to actually have the Meal Plan as and Icon. Well I just found myself able to do that very thing by going under view and then to customize tool bar. Very nice thank you Marine software.
