DESCRIPTION
AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X. With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.

Using AppleJack, you can repair your disk, repair permissions, validate the system's preference files, and get rid of possibly corrupted cache files. In most cases, these operations can help get your machine back on track. The important thing is that you don't need another startup disk with you. All you need to do is restart in Single User Mode (SUM), by holding down the command and s keys at startup, and then typing applejack, or applejack auto (which will run through all the tasks automatically), or applejack auto restart (which will also restart the computer automatically at the end of the process).

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.4.3:
  • [Fixed] Compatible with Intel-based Mac OS X systems.
  • [Added] Added an automated uninstaller routine, to enable easy and almost foolproof uninstallation of AppleJack.
  • [Added] Added /var/root/Library/Caches to the system cache cleanup routine.
  • [Added] Experimental expert mode exists, but is currently hidden until it can be tested further. (see Appendix B). The only well-tested options at this point are the memory test using the included Memtest utility, and the option to disable auto login.
  • [Fixed] Improved the internal coding of user-input prompts. Uses a standardized interface for these functions now.
  • [Fixed] The preference file check now uses a null byte character to separate files rather than an arbitrary "improbable" string.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2.x - 10.4 (not Mac OS X 10.5 compatible).

HANDYMAC  AppleJack's developer deserves a BIG round of applause from the Mac community for this great utility, which has saved many of our bacons over the last several years.

Unfortunately, making AJ work with 10.5 ('Leopard') is going to require some serious work, due to significant internal changes in OS X; and at the moment the developer just doesn't have the time to put into it (go to the Forums on the AJ home page -- "More Information" link above -- to see the discussion).

However, AJ *is* Open Source, so anyone can pick up the code and give it a try. I don't have the skills, but maybe someone will....  (Version 1.4.3)

DANWAY  If your not going to update it to work with the latest version of OS X, pull it offline and let it die. 1 and 1/2 years since the last update is long enough.  (Version 1.4.3)

FRANCE2020  Is applejack compatible with version 10.5.2? I tried to use it, and it said something like "this user cannot authorize applejack." I am the only user, and I used in SUM.  (Version 1.4.3)

KURTTAPPE  In answer to a previous question about finding alternative methods to do what AppleJack did, repairing permissions from the command line is fortunately very easy:

diskutil repairPermissions /

Note the capitalization of "Permissions". Hope this helps.  (Version 1.4.3)
