DESCRIPTION
AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X. With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.

Using AppleJack, you can repair your disk, repair permissions, validate the system's preference files, and get rid of possibly corrupted cache files. In most cases, these operations can help get your machine back on track. The important thing is that you don't need another startup disk with you. All you need to do is restart in Single User Mode (SUM), by holding down the command and s keys at startup, and then typing applejack, or applejack auto (which will run through all the tasks automatically), or applejack auto restart (which will also restart the computer automatically at the end of the process).

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.4.3:
  • [Fixed] Compatible with Intel-based Mac OS X systems.
  • [Added] Added an automated uninstaller routine, to enable easy and almost foolproof uninstallation of AppleJack.
  • [Added] Added /var/root/Library/Caches to the system cache cleanup routine.
  • [Added] Experimental expert mode exists, but is currently hidden until it can be tested further. (see Appendix B). The only well-tested options at this point are the memory test using the included Memtest utility, and the option to disable auto login.
  • [Fixed] Improved the internal coding of user-input prompts. Uses a standardized interface for these functions now.
  • [Fixed] The preference file check now uses a null byte character to separate files rather than an arbitrary "improbable" string.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2.x or later. AppleJack 1.4.3 is now Intel-compatible.

FRANCE2020  Is applejack compatible with version 10.5.2? I tried to use it, and it said something like "this user cannot authorize applejack." I am the only user, and I used in SUM.  (Version 1.4.3)

KURTTAPPE  In answer to a previous question about finding alternative methods to do what AppleJack did, repairing permissions from the command line is fortunately very easy:

diskutil repairPermissions /

Note the capitalization of "Permissions". Hope this helps.  (Version 1.4.3)

JOHN SAWYER CJS  Of the tasks that Applejack performs, I suspect updating it to get permissions repair to work as OS 10.5 expects, without causing some disaster, would be the hardest task (not sure how hard, not being much of a programmer). It took a couple of the Swiss army knife utility authors (OnyX? Leopard Cache Cleaner? or both?) a few tries to get that one right.

I suspect there may also be some new cache file locations, and maybe some old ones no longer in effect, requiring some changes there too, but not as big a job as permissions repair.  (Version 1.4.3)

ASMEURER  Until this is updated, fsck- fy will perform a file system consistency check in single user mode (the first test performed in AppleJack). Does anyone know how to manually run the other commands, especially the permissions repair or cache clearing ones?   (Version 1.4.3)
