Blue Planet overview

Blue Planet shows you wonderful satellite images of the Earth as your desktop background. The map changes in real-time as the sun travels across the sky, illuminating different parts of the world and leaving others in the shadow of the night.

Features:
  • Choose from four gorgeous maps.
  • Use Apple's Core Location technology to show your current location on the map
  • Center the map on your location or have it follow the sun's course across the sky
  • Display the map under or above the icons on your Desktop
  • Launch Blue Planet automatically when you start your Mac (optional)

I have just been in touch with the developer and he has confirmed that the app is Yosemite compatible but with one caveat: "If you enable Dark Mode, the menu bar icon will not look good. An update for that should be available soon."

I bought this app and I have to say I’m very impressed with it. I have been using OSXPlanet for some years and would have continued with it, if it was Lion compatible. It’s not, and it most probably will never be, so I went looking for an alternative. I tried EarthDesk and found it pretty limiting and overpriced. Then I came across Blue Planet. It seemed to do pretty much everything that EarthDesk did, except display clouds in real time, and it’s a fifth of the price. Have tested both apps, I found Blue Planet was a simpler setup. I did, however, want a couple of features it doesn’t have – so I contacted the developer and he was most receptive to suggestions. You can’t put a price on that!

I don't see any clouds in real time. If this is just an animated rotation of a static map then it is not worth the expense. EarthDesk in contrast gives you a real view including clouds.
